Why sample specialties when you can complete them?

A traditional Advanced Open Water course introduces you to several specialty areas through one training dive from each. It is a useful sampler—but it does not normally complete the full specialty programs.

Ocean Tribe’s Advanced Alternative package takes a more focused route. You complete the full SSI Deep Diving, Navigation and Enriched Air Nitrox programs, gaining practical skills that work together on real-world dives.

In the same three-day timeframe, you can earn three SSI specialty certifications, complete six training dives and qualify to dive as deep as 40 metres within your certification and training limits.

The result is a stronger foundation for deeper reefs, wreck diving, dive travel and future advanced specialty training.

Certification

Hold an SSI Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent qualification from another recognised agency.

Minimum age

You must be at least 15 years old to complete this package and qualify for the full 40-metre Deep Diving certification.

Advanced Alternative FAQs

Why is this called an Advanced Open Water alternative?
The package is designed for Open Water Divers looking for their next level of training. Instead of completing introductory dives from five specialties, you complete three full SSI specialty programs: Deep Diving, Navigation and Enriched Air Nitrox.
How many certification cards will I receive?
After successfully completing all requirements, you earn three separate SSI specialty certifications: Deep Diving, Navigation and Enriched Air Nitrox.
How many dives are included?
The package includes six ocean training dives: four Deep Diving dives and two Navigation dives. The Nitrox program includes theory, gas analysis and dive-planning procedures.
Will I be qualified to dive to 40 metres?
Successful completion of the full SSI Deep Diving program qualifies eligible adult divers to plan recreational dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres. You must always remain within your personal experience, local regulations, conditions and certification limits.
Does Nitrox always give me more bottom time?
Nitrox can provide longer no-decompression limits on suitable dive profiles, but it does not extend every dive. The oxygen content also creates a shallower maximum operating depth that must be calculated and respected.
Can I use Nitrox on the deep dives?
That depends on the planned depth, available gas mixture and its maximum operating depth. Your instructor will select and approve the appropriate breathing gas for each training dive.
Do I need to own a dive computer?
A dive computer is an important part of deep and Nitrox dive planning. Contact Ocean Tribe before the course to confirm the equipment provided and whether you should bring your own computer.
Is this suitable immediately after Open Water?
Certified Open Water Divers can enter the package, but comfort, buoyancy and general dive awareness are important before progressing deeper. Ocean Tribe may recommend additional experience or a Scuba Skills Update based on your recent diving history.
What is the minimum age?
The minimum age for this complete package is 15 years. This allows participants who meet all requirements to complete the full Deep Diving program with its 40-metre maximum training depth.
How long does the package take?
The package is scheduled over three days: two Navigation dives on day one, two Deep dives on day two, and two final Deep dives followed by the Nitrox course on day three.
How much does the package cost?
