The question of how to prepare for your PADI IDC is of vital importance to getting off to a good start on the PADI Instructor Development Course. The IDC can be a fun or fulfilling learning experience or it can be stressful as you struggle to keep up with everything. Being well prepared can make the difference as to which of the experiences you have.
This article is aimed at those of you who are signing up to the full IDC program of the Assistant Instructor (AI) and Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) courses and has a few steps to make sure you have the ideal preparation.
PADI IDC eLearning
A compulsory item to prepare for your PADI IDC is now the PADI IDC eLearning which should be completed prior to the start of the IDC. This introduces you to the following sections and has quizzes and knowledge reviews to complete to ensure you are taking in the information.
11 – Conducting and Evaluating Knowledge Development
12 – Confined Water Training
13 – Open Water Training
14 – Continuing Education and Leadership Courses
15 – The Business of Diving
16 – How to Teach the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) – required for crossover candidates; optional for PADI Members
Completing this ensures that you are well prepared for the IDC classes and workshops and is monitored online by your PADI Course Director.
Dive Theory
The dive theory is something that you studied on you PADI Divemaster Course and will be tested on both the PADI IDC and the PADI IE. A lot of people when they skip up on the PADI Instructor exam do so on the dive theory and this is something that can be avoided by making sure you are familiar with the dive theory.
You can do this by studying your PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving and Diving Knowledge Workbook that were in your PADI Divemaster Crewpack. Alternatively you can purchase access to the PADI Dive Theory Online eLearning and study and practice dive theory questions via your PADI eLearning portal.
Sections to be addressed are:
Physics
Physiology
Decompression Theory and the Recreational Diver Planner
Dive Skills & The Environment
Equipment
Dive theory is not taught on the IDC as the IDC is concentrating on developing your instructional skills os being well prepared on dive theory is of utmost importance to having an easier IDC. A key point is to do as many practice quizzes as possible.
“Every battle is won before it is ever fought.”- Sun Tzu
Dive Skills
The 24 skill circuit you did on the PADI Divemaster course is repeated on the PADI IDC. You will need to be able to demonstrate the 24 basic scuba skills to a quality that a person who has never seen them before can easily imitate what you have done.
The 24 skills can be found listed in the PADI Divemaster section of the PADI Instructor Manual.
Practice each skill in the pool and mentally before the PADI IDC. The key is to break down each skill into a number of steps with pauses in between each step so they are easy to see and you can exaggerate them ti make the skill look easy.
Try and practice the skills circuit in the 4 weeks running up to the IDC if at all possible.
PADI Instructor Manual Familiarisation
Your PADI Instructor Manual will be your most important reference tool as a PADI Instructor and knowing how to quickly navigate it and find a standard is very important to prepare for your PADI IDC.
There is a guide at the beginning of the Instructor Manual on how to use it. Get familiar with this right now and begin to look through the Manual and learn the structure. Get familiar with the layout of each program as the structure is identical throughout making it easy to quickly navigate to a section.
General Standards and Procedures covers the standards pertaining to all PADI courses, while specific course standards can be found in the individual course guides. You should make sure you know where to find specific standards for a course (such as Ratios, Minimum Age, Dives) quickly in the manual.
The more you are acquainted with the PADI Instructor Manual will assist you in saving time on Standards exams and finding standards quickly when you need to reference them throughout your diver career.
Go Through the PADI Guide to Teaching
The PADI Guide to Teaching is included in your PADI IDC eLearning and give teaching tips and guidelines for preparing to teach PADI courses. It should be read prior to the start of the IDC and will be referred to during the program.
Know the PADI System and Your PADI Courses
You have done remarkably well so far to get to being ready to start a PADI IDC. You have completed at least the Open Water Diver Course, Advanced Open Water Diver Course, Rescue Diver and Divemaster. Well Done!
Being a PADI Instructor requires knowing how the PADI system works intrinsically and you should refer back to your previous diver course materials to jog your memory about them.
The best thing you can do to assist this is also to assist a PADI Instructor when they are teaching a PADI Open Water Diver Course, PADI Advanced Open Water Course and PADI Rescue Diver course. The more familiar you are with how experienced instructors set up and conduct their PADI courses and training the easier you will find the IDC.
Get Your Medical Sorted and Additional Documentation
To avoid frustrating administrative problems on the IDC/IE you should get all the required documents for your IDC ready. You are required to have a dive medical signed and stamped by a physician, stating that you are fit for diving. You should download this and get it filled out by your physician prior to the start of the PADI IDC (The medical goes to PADI as required paperwork).
You will need all of your PADI certifications and certification numbers. These can all be found in your eCards in the PADI app or on your physical dive cards. If you did some of your previous certifications with another training organisation then you will need a copy of the certification to submit with your Instructor Application.
If you follow these practices to prepare for your PADI IDC, it will make so much difference to your experience. If you have any questions about any of the preparation points then please contact us and we will be delighted to assist you in getting properly prepared for the PADI IDC and the beginning of your PADI Instructor journey.
The Ocean Tribe PADI Instructor Development Course incorporates the Assistant Instructor Course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor Course. The whole program takes place over 7-10 days, followed by a 2-day instructor exam, conducted by an incoming PADI Instructor Examiner.
During the PADI IDC, you will take part in a number of workshops to learn the art of teaching students and setting up your teaching scenarios for safety and accomplishing the skills. You will take part in presentations from our PADI Course Director Mark and PADI IDC Staff Instructors, about the skills of teaching, marketing and working in the scuba diving industry. There will be a number of pool sessions in which you will take part in graded presentations when you are put in the scenario of an instructor teaching a skill to a number of students. You will also give short academic presentations on set questions to your PADI Course Director. Finally, there are a couple of days in the ocean when you focus on being graded on teaching the open water segments of
diver courses.
There is also the option to complete the Emergency First Response First Aid and CPR Instructor program during the course which is necessary to be able to teach the Rescue course when you are a certified instructor. Following on from the course we can look at getting you some PADI Specialty Instructor ratings to move you up the PADI Instructional ladder.
Check out the attached PDF for full details of the IDC or contact idc@oceantribe.co for more info.

Are you ready to come diving in the beautiful Indian Ocean waters of Kenya? Snorkel, scuba dive, beach and safari, Kenya has it all. Fantastic news, as of 1st August 2020 international flights to Kenya have been resumed. We are looking forward to welcoming you to Ocean Tribe in Diani for scuba diving safaris, PADI diving courses and snorkelling. Below are the latest updates for travel
Kenya Air Travel Protocol Update 2
Issued by Cabinet Secretary, Transport Mr. James Macharia on the 31st July 2020.
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya directed that International Air Travel would resume on 1st August, 2020 and instructed the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works to develop a Protocol to ensure the safety of travellers.
The Ministry in consultation with relevant stakeholders prepared a Protocol for Air Travel Operations during the Covid-19 Public Health Crisis. The protocol seeks to provide guidelines to ensure that air travel remains safe during the pandemic for domestic and international flights.
The Protocol recognizes that the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been experienced in most sectors of the economy and the aviation industry is amongst the worst impacted.
The Protocol has therefore confirmed that:-
All arriving passengers on international flights whose body temperature is NOT above 37.5° C (99.5°F); do NOT have a persistent cough, difficulty in breathing or other flu-like symptoms; have negative PCR based COVID – 19 test carried out within 96 hours before travel and are from countries considered low to medium risk COVID – 19 transmission areas shall be exempt from quarantine.
List of countries identified and announce yesterday from which travelers will be exempt from quarantine include:
• Canada
• South Korea
• Namibia
• Uganda
• China
• Rwanda
• Morocco
• Japan
• Zimbabwe
• Ethiopia
• Switzerland
Additional countries identified today following further review and Consultation between the Cabinet Secretaries responsible for Transport, Health and Tourism:
• The United States of America (except for California, Florida and Texas);
• United Kingdom
• France
• Germany
• Netherlands
• Qatar
• United Arab Emirates
• Italy
Review of countries from which travelers will not be required to be quarantined upon arrival will be undertaken by Ministry of Health on day to day basis. The Ministry will then advise the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Urban Development and Housing for further action.
The risk profile of any country could change and therefore the status with regard to these clarifications and directives could also change.
We wish to emphasize and reiterate that from 1st August 2020 Kenyan Airspace will be open to authorised airlines and travelers. The issue is only whether the travelers will be required to quarantine upon arrival in Kenya due to the risk evaluation of respective countries. Those required to quarantine will do so at Government designated facility or at their home subject to prevailing guidelines.
For those passengers traveling out of the country, they will be required to abide by the particular travel, health and COVID-19 related requirements of the destination country;
Passengers arriving on flights after the curfew, with a valid Air Ticket and Boarding Pass shall be allowed to proceed to their hotels and/or residences;
Drivers should have evidence that they have come from the Airport to drop or pick up passengers;
Passengers departing on flights after the curfew, with a valid Air Ticket and Boarding Pass shall be allowed to proceed to their departure airport;
Air Operators shall provide guidance material to passengers regarding application of the preventive measures on board;
Where physical distancing cannot be guaranteed because of the seat configuration or other operational constraints, the crew members will make constant on-board announcements reminding passengers to adhere at all times to all the other preventive measures including strict hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette and should wear a surgical face mask. In addition and in such cases other measures such as cabin recirculation air filters will be put in place; and
Working jointly with Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works is reviewing frequency and timing of flights to facilitate physical distancing at the Airports.
Procedures for First Aid and Diving Accidents are taken seriously at Ocean Tribe. All our dive staff are fully trained in First Aid and CPR. We have an emergency action plan enacted by all staff in the event of an emergency.
Boats all carry emergency oxygen cylinders and a well equipped first aid kit. They carry life jackets and rescue lines with a buoy. Tour leaders and dive professionals carry out extensive dive safety and roster procedures with boat cover available at all times.
The nearest recompression chamber for Ocean Tribe is just down the road in the Kenya Naval Yard in Mombasa.
As a general note, it is a good idea to bring your own small first aid kit with you for dealing with minor scrapes and illnesses. Other good things to bring include mosquito repellent and anti-malarial tablets (not Larium).
Dive insurance can be provided through most travel insurance packages. You should make sure you check how much you are covered for though. Items to be checked should be regarding to dive limits, type of diving and depth.
We recommend Divers Alert Network (DAN), who can provide dive insurance packages up to professional level and the top packages will cover you for non-diving related conditions. Click on the link below to register for a Sport Member Package.
For divers who are enrolled on our professional dive courses such as the PADI Divemaster Course and the PADI IDC, you can look at Professional Dive Insurance. This is a requirement to work in a number of countries following on from your dive training and to be an active PADI member. It is recommended for all dive professionals, no matter where they are working.
For both Sport and Professional dive insurance policies, non-diving activities and considerations can be covered.
It is a good idea to carry insurance in the unlikely event that anything were to happen to you, you are definitely covered.
A medical to dive is required for all divers with any pre-existing medical conditions, which might be contradictions to diving safely
When you arrive here before you start your training we will ask to fill out the Medical Statement either physically or via our online medical declaration. This will then be assessed to see if a doctor’s approval is required for diving. For your diving professional programs, we require a medical form signed and stamped by a licensed doctor.
We recommend that you print off and get the medical to dive evaluation done and a couple of copies signed by your family doctor before coming to Kenya. The Medical Statement applies to every course and can be downloaded here. Genuine medical statements, not copies have to be submitted to PADI for the IE and Instructor Application.
PADI diving qualifications are among the most widely recognized worldwide and can be used anywhere in the world.
PADI Instructor
The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) rating is the first PADI Instructor level attained by dive professionals. During their training, instructor candidates review PADI Standards, procedures, philosophies and teaching methods, as well as hone their practical teaching ability, watermanship, and diving knowledge.

Teaching status PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors may conduct a range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba Diving up to Divemaster (except or specialties which require specific Specialty Instructor ratings.
PADI Divemaster
The divemaster rating is the first PADI Pro Membership level. PADI Divemasters supervise diving activities for certified divers, assist instructors with training student divers, and instruct skin diving and snorkelling.
This rating denotes an individual who has exemplary diving skills and role model behaviour, solid rescue skills, professional-level knowledge of dive theory, dive management and supervision abilities, and competence as a certified assistant.
