Your First Scuba Dive in Diani: What to Expect with Ocean Tribe

try scuba diving in a pool

Planning your first scuba dive in Diani? With Ocean Tribe, you can begin in the pool, learn the basics with an instructor and discover the underwater world through a supervised diving experience.

Perhaps you have watched divers heading out from the beach and wondered what it feels like beneath the surface. Maybe your children want to try scuba during half term, or you are ready to add something new to your Kenya holiday.

Knowing what to expect can make taking that first step much easier. Here is how to choose your starting point and prepare for your underwater adventure.

Choose Your First Scuba Dive in Diani

Ocean Tribe offers two introductory experiences, depending on whether you want to stay in the pool or explore the reef.

SSI Try Scuba is a pool-only introduction available from age eight. It gives children, teenagers and adults an opportunity to experience scuba equipment and underwater breathing without enrolling in a certification course.

SSI Basic Diver is available from age ten and combines introductory learning, pool practice and two supervised ocean dives. It is an experience programme rather than a full diving certification.

If you are unsure which option suits you, tell us your age, water confidence and what you would like to try. We will help you choose.

Explore Ocean Tribe’s Basic Diver experience.

Start with the Basics

Your first dive begins with learning, rather than heading straight into the ocean.

For Basic Diver, introductory digital materials explain scuba equipment, underwater communication and essential safety concepts. This gives you a foundation before practising in the water.

There is no need to arrive knowing diving terminology. Bring your curiosity and ask questions whenever something is unfamiliar.

Experience Your First Underwater Breaths in the Pool

The pool is where you begin getting comfortable with scuba.

Using a regulator to breathe underwater can feel unusual at first. During the pool introduction, you practise breathing through the equipment and moving underwater with professional guidance.

For anyone who wants to take a smaller first step, the pool-only Try Scuba programme offers an introduction without an ocean dive. No previous diving experience or formal swimming test is required for this experience.

Discover the Reef with Your Instructor

If you choose Basic Diver, the programme continues with two supervised ocean dives on Diani’s reefs.

This is where your pool practice becomes part of an underwater adventure. Rather than looking at the ocean from the beach, you get to explore beneath its surface.

Basic Diver has a maximum programme depth of 12 metres. Your actual depth depends on your age, comfort, progress, conditions and your instructor’s judgement. Reaching a particular depth is never the goal of a first experience.

What If You Feel Nervous?

Tell us before your session. Whether you are uncertain about the equipment, underwater breathing or being in the ocean, sharing your concerns helps us discuss the right starting point.

You do not need to choose the biggest adventure immediately. A pool experience may be the best introduction for you, while another family member feels ready for ocean diving.

Treat your first session as an opportunity to learn how scuba feels and discover whether you want to continue.

Can Children Join a First Diving Experience?

Yes—there are different starting points for different ages.

Children from age eight can join the pool-only Try Scuba experience. From age ten, they can participate in Basic Diver, subject to the programme requirements and appropriate parent or guardian consent.

For a family booking, tell us each child’s age and water confidence. Choosing a suitable experience matters more than having everyone follow the same route.

Prepare for Your First Scuba Dive in Diani

For Basic Diver, participants should be comfortable in the water and able to float or tread water for ten minutes. You will also complete a diver medical questionnaire; medical clearance may be required depending on your answers.

Bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Ocean Tribe provides the diving equipment needed for the experience.

When booking, confirm your session arrangements and allow time to complete the required preparation.

Loved It? Learn to Dive

Your first scuba experience could be the beginning of a new hobby.

Ocean Tribe’s SSI Open Water Diver course is available from age ten and combines digital learning, pool training and four ocean training dives. You can complete the course over three days, or choose a fourth day with two additional fun dives after certification.

Divers aged ten to fourteen receive a junior certification with age-specific depth and supervision requirements. The course also includes swimming assessments and medical paperwork.

You can start the digital learning before arriving in Diani, making it easier to prepare around your holiday plans.
