A real certification in just two days

The SSI Scuba Diver course is a shorter route into certified diving. It is ideal if you have limited holiday time, prefer to learn in stages, or are happiest diving under the supervision of an SSI professional.

You will begin with SSI digital learning, build confidence in the swimming pool and then head into the Indian Ocean for two open-water training dives.

Once certified, you can dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres with an SSI dive professional in conditions similar to those in which you trained.

Your Scuba Diver certification is also a stepping stone. When you are ready for greater independence and an 18-metre depth limit, you can continue your training and upgrade to SSI Open Water Diver.

Simple entry requirements

Minimum age

You can start from age 10. Divers aged 10–14 receive the appropriate junior certification and follow the relevant youth depth and supervision limits.

Water confidence

You should have basic swimming ability and be comfortable in the water. Your instructor will explain the required water-confidence assessment.

Diving medical

Every participant completes a diver medical questionnaire. Depending on your answers, clearance from a doctor may be required before diving.

Scuba Diver FAQs

What is the SSI Scuba Diver course?
It is a recognised entry-level scuba certification and a shorter version of the SSI Open Water Diver course. It qualifies you to dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres while supervised by a dive professional.
How long does the course take?
The course takes two days and includes digital learning, orientation, pool training and two open-water training dives.
What is the difference between Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver?
Scuba Diver is a shorter course with a 12-metre depth limit and requires professional supervision. Open Water Diver includes additional training, has an 18-metre limit and allows qualified divers to dive with a buddy without direct professional supervision.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. The Scuba Diver course is part of the Open Water Diver training pathway. You can complete the additional training required to upgrade when you have more time.
Do I need previous scuba experience?
No previous experience is required. Your instructor will introduce the equipment and guide you through each skill before your ocean dives.
Do I need to be able to swim?
You need basic swimming ability and should be comfortable in the water. Speak with Ocean Tribe if you have any concerns about the water-confidence requirements.
What should I bring?
Bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection and your completed medical paperwork. Ocean Tribe provides the scuba equipment needed for the course.
What is included in the $380 price?
The price includes SSI digital learning, use of the required dive equipment, pool instruction, two ocean training dives, certification, boat refreshments and transfers within Diani.
