DIGITAL LEARNING

Before you ever step into the water, you’ll begin with Digital Training. This important first step introduces you to scuba diving, explains essential safety concepts, and provides the background knowledge you’ll need for each session. It also includes your theory briefings, ensuring you feel well-prepared before starting any in-water activities.

As the course progresses, your SSI Instructor will expand on this foundation during each dive, helping you connect what you’ve learned online with real-world experience. By completing most of the SSI Open Water Diver Digital Learning before arriving, you’ll start with a solid understanding. This early preparation not only boosts your confidence but also allows you to concentrate fully on developing your diving skills in the pool and ocean.

SSI ’s cutting-edge digital learning leads the world in diver education and enables you to complete the knowledge development in the comfort of your own home. You can take notes in the app to discuss with your SSI Instructor any concepts that you don’t understand. You’ll complete quick reviews at the end of each section in the online learning. You need to get them right to move forward, so it’s clear you’ve understood the material before continuing.

POOL TRAINING

Now it’s time to get wet—this is what you came for! We conduct confined water training for the Open Water Diver course in the swimming pool right at our dive base, making it easy and convenient to learn essential skills in a safe, controlled environment.

The pool session teaches you to use SCUBA safely and procedures to troubleshoot any problems you potentially might have. The swimming pool environment allows you a safe area to practice with no outside factors to worry about such as poor visibility, surge, or current.

This is about making sure you are comfortable using the scuba unit so our Instructors will make sure you have ample time to practice skills and perform them with ease before moving on to the next section of the course

OCEAN DIVES

The final two days of the course are when the real adventure begins. You’ll head out by boat to one of our nearby coral reefs, chosen specifically for training and ideal conditions.

At the start of each dive, you’ll review a few of the skills you already mastered in the pool. Once that’s done, it’s time for the “tour” section of the dive. Here, you’ll explore the vibrant marine life of the Indian Ocean and continue practicing your diving techniques in a calm, weightless environment that feels truly out of this world.

You will have 4 dives in total after which you are a fully certified SSI Open Water Diver, assuming that you have met all of the other course performance requirements.

WHERE WILL I DIVE?

Your SSI Open Water Diver course will take place on the main coral reefs of Diani on the selected dive sites of the day.

Do I need to be able to swim to scuba dive?

A question that we are constantly asked at Ocean Tribe is “Do I need to be able to swim to scuba dive?”. This is a more complicated answer than a simple yes or no, as it really depends on the experience you are looking to have.

If you are after getting your Open Water Diver licence or any other scuba diving certification then the straight answer in yes. On the entry level Open Water Diver and Scuba Diver courses there are swim and floating tests that you need to be able to accomplish in order to earn the dive certification. On the Open Water courses this is a 200m swim and a 10 minute tread or float.
