Beginner diving FAQs
Do I need any diving experience?
No. These programmes are designed for complete beginners, starting with theory and controlled-water training before ocean diving.
How long does it take to become certified?
The SSI Open Water Diver course usually takes three to four days, including digital learning, pool training and open-water dives.
What is the minimum age?
Junior Open Water Diver training is available from age 10. Younger children can explore suitable SSI programmes such as SSI Explorers.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Certification students need basic swimming ability and water confidence. The Open Water course includes a 200-metre swim and a 10-minute float or tread-water assessment.
What equipment do I need?
Ocean Tribe provides the standard diving equipment required for training. Bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection and your phone or tablet for the MySSI app.
What can I do after certification?
Join recreational dives around Diani or continue with advanced and specialty training such as Nitrox, Perfect Buoyancy or Marine Ecology.
