Course overview

Make Every Dive Minute Count

Normal scuba air contains approximately 21% oxygen. Enriched Air Nitrox contains a higher percentage of oxygen and therefore less nitrogen.

When used correctly, this can extend your no-decompression limits on many recreational dives. It is particularly useful for repetitive diving, dive holidays, liveaboards, underwater photography and sites where you want more time at a particular depth.

During the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox course, you will learn how to select an appropriate gas mixture, analyze a cylinder, mark and record its contents, set a compatible dive computer and manage oxygen exposure.

Important: Nitrox does not automatically allow you to dive deeper. Every oxygen mixture has a maximum operating depth, and you must remain within both your certification limits and the limits of the gas you are breathing.

What changes?

Air vs Enriched Air Nitrox

Nitrox replaces part of the nitrogen in normal air with additional oxygen. That changes both your no-decompression limits and the oxygen exposure that must be managed.

Normal scuba air

The remainder is primarily nitrogen. Standard air is suitable for recreational diving within the diver’s training and planned limits.

Participants must be at least 10 years old.

Nitrox Course FAQs

Does Nitrox let me dive deeper?
No. A higher oxygen percentage creates a shallower maximum operating depth. Nitrox is generally used to manage nitrogen exposure and extend no-decompression limits within the gas mixture’s safe depth.
Do I need to complete a dive?
No required training dive is listed for this course. Certification focuses on knowledge, gas analysis, dive planning and practical procedures. Optional Nitrox dives can be arranged separately.
What is the difference between EAN32 and EAN40?
Level 1 qualifies you to use mixtures containing up to 32% oxygen. Level 2 extends this to mixtures containing up to 40% oxygen and provides greater flexibility for recreational Nitrox planning.
Will Nitrox always give me a longer dive?
Not necessarily. Your actual dive time may still be limited by gas consumption, depth, conditions, thermal comfort, your buddy or the dive plan. Nitrox can extend the no-decompression limit on many profiles, but it does not guarantee a longer dive.
Will Nitrox make me feel less tired?
Some divers report feeling less tired after Nitrox dives, but this experience varies and should not be treated as a guaranteed benefit. The measurable benefit is the reduction in nitrogen exposure for an appropriate dive profile.
Is a medical form required?
The standard diving medical screening requirements apply if you add in-water training or optional dives. Tell Ocean Tribe about relevant medical conditions or medication before participating.
