Wildlife, not a promise. Sightings vary with the dive site, season and ocean conditions and cannot be guaranteed. Give marine life space, never touch or chase animals, and keep clear of the coral.
The knowledge development section of the SSI Divemaster course consists of the SSI Dive Guide Digital Learning where you will read the chapters and answer the knowledge reviews. Your SSI Instructor will go through these with you and fill in any gaps in knowledge.
You will also study the SSI Science of Diving Specialty and SSI Computer Diver Specialty for the remainder of your dive theory before completing a final exam. During your studies, your SSI Instructor will be happy to explain anything you are finding hard to understand and make sure you know it.
It is a great idea to get as much out of the knowledge development section of the SSI Divemaster course as possible. You will acquire knowledge that you will use throughout your dive career, but most practically if you choose to continue up the professional ladder. You will use it on the SSI ITC exams, the ITC presentations, the SSI Instructor Evaluation, the SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer exams, and even the Instructor Trainer entrance exam.

Yes, you must complete the Science of Diving course in addition to the Dive Guide course to become an SSI Divemaster. You must be proficient in dive theory to be able to answer questions from students and explain concepts in diving. You have all of the SSI Digital Learning in your MySSI app as a backup library whenever you need it. This enables you to stay current and on top of all of your dive theory.
One of the major roles of an SSI Divemaster is to act as an assistant in training to an SSI Instructor. This can consist of many roles including control, demonstration assistance, course logistic preparation, dive guiding, equipment troubleshooting, and more. During the SSI Divemaster course, you will be frequently assisting Ocean Tribe SSI Instructors during real SSI dive courses (if there is not a required course happening at that time then simulations will substitute).
A Divemaster’s key role is to assist the SSI Instructor in controlling the dive group. When the instructor works with a student on a mobile exercise, the Divemaster supervises the rest of the group. In larger classes, SSI standards require additional professionals in the water. This ensures safety, organization, and effective training.
SSI skills like air sharing are easier to demonstrate with a Divemaster assisting. When the Divemaster joins the demonstration, all students get a clear view. This eliminates the need for multiple demonstrations, making training more efficient.
Assisting in training roles often requires the Divemaster to make sure that all the course logistics are in place. This can include packing the spare box, gearing up student divers, and making sure a ESA or descent line is available. SSI Divemasters help ensure tanks are filled, ready, and loaded onto the boat. They assist with course logistics in many ways, so staying alert is essential.
A Divemaster might be called upon to lead the tour section of SSI courses, while the SSI Instructor pays close attention to the students and their reactions, meeting performance requirements. Dive guiding is also a job that is frequently performed by SSI Divemasters with certified divers.
On a dive boat, nothing is more disappointing than a canceled dive. Nothing is more worrying to an inexperienced student than a malfunctioning piece of dive equipment. An SSI Divemaster assisting in training should make sure that they have the knowledge and spares to ensure that dives do not get canceled and minor equipment adjustments can be made.
It is often the case with student divers that they seem to ask the SSI Divemasters for advice, hints, and tips during diver training. This is rather than approach their SSI Instructor who they find not as approachable as the friendly Divemaster. The key is in the title! DiveMASTER….
Embarking on the SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) with Ocean Tribe in Diani Beach, Kenya, is a significant step in your diving career. First, create a profile on the MySSI platform. Once your profile is set up, Ocean Tribe will assign the ITC Digital Learning materials to your account.
After the assignment, you can access the materials through the MySSI app or website. This flexibility allows you to study at your own pace, whether on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
The ITC Digital Learning is divided into ten comprehensive sections:
Each section includes review questions and assessments to reinforce your understanding.
It’s essential to complete all ten sections, including the reviews and assessments, before the start of your ITC sessions. This preparation ensures you’re ready for the practical applications and evaluations that follow.
After completing the sections, you’ll take a final exam. Achieving a passing score is necessary to proceed with the in-person components of the ITC.
Remember, thorough preparation through the different modules sets the foundation for your success as an SSI Instructor. Dive in, study diligently, and get ready to inspire the next generation of divers.
