Short answer: you do not necessarily need to own a dive computer to start scuba diving. You can usually rent one, and some dive centres include a computer with their equipment packages. However, if you plan to dive regularly, buying your own is one of the most useful equipment investments you can make.

A personal dive computer does more than record an interesting collection of numbers. It continuously tracks your depth and time, estimates your remaining no-decompression limit, monitors your ascent rate and guides you through safety stops. Most importantly, it follows your individual dive profile—not your buddy’s and not the group’s.

So, do I need a dive computer before buying anything else? Perhaps not immediately. But once diving becomes more than an occasional holiday activity, owning one makes a great deal of sense.

What Does a Dive Computer Actually Do?

During a dive, your body absorbs inert gas—usually nitrogen. The amount absorbed depends on factors including how deep you go, how long you remain there and what breathing gas you use.

A dive computer measures your depth and time throughout the dive, then applies a decompression model to estimate how much time you can remain at your current depth without requiring mandatory decompression stops.

Depending on the model, it may display:

  • Your current and maximum depth
  • Elapsed dive time
  • Remaining no-decompression time
  • Ascent speed
  • Safety-stop information
  • Water temperature
  • Surface interval
  • No-fly time
  • Nitrox settings
  • Cylinder pressure, if air integration is fitted

The major advantage is that the calculation follows your actual, often multilevel, profile. If you spend part of a dive at 25 metres and then move gradually into shallower water, the computer adjusts its information continuously.

That flexibility is one reason most recreational divers now use computers rather than relying exclusively on tables. As PADI explains, it is still possible to plan dives using tables, a depth gauge and a watch, but a computer makes real-time dive information much easier to follow.

Can I Just Use My Buddy’s Computer?

No. A buddy’s computer is not a substitute for having one assigned to you.

Even when two divers enter and leave the water together, their profiles are rarely identical. One diver may swim slightly deeper, descend earlier or spend longer investigating something near the bottom. Those small differences accumulate, particularly during repetitive dives.

Your computer needs to remain with you throughout a series of dives so it can account for your previous exposure. You should not swap computers between divers halfway through a dive day or holiday. A computer that did not accompany you on an earlier dive cannot reconstruct the nitrogen exposure from that dive.

Renting a Dive Computer Is a Perfectly Reasonable Option

If you are taking an entry-level course or making your first few dives after qualification, renting can be sensible. It allows you to gain experience before deciding which display, controls and features you prefer.

Renting may also be enough if you:

  • Dive only once or twice a year
  • Always use the same trusted dive centre
  • Want to try several models before buying
  • Are still deciding what type of diving interests you
  • Have other essential equipment to purchase first

Ask the dive centre which computer it supplies before your trip. Download the manual or watch the manufacturer’s tutorial so that the controls are not completely unfamiliar when you reach the boat.

Before entering the water, make sure you understand the main display, remaining no-decompression time, ascent warning, safety-stop screen and any alarms. Check that the computer is set for the gas you are actually using. This is particularly important when diving with nitrox.

Renting works well, but unfamiliar equipment introduces friction. Menus differ, alarm symbols vary and some displays are easier to interpret than others. You do not want your first attempt at understanding a warning to happen at depth.

Why Owning a Dive Computer Is Better

The strongest argument for ownership is familiarity.

When you repeatedly use the same computer, reading it becomes instinctive. You know where to find the important information, what its alarms sound like and how it behaves during an ascent or safety stop. That familiarity reduces distraction underwater.

Your own computer also provides continuity. It tracks every dive in a repetitive series, retains your log and applies consistent settings. You are not dependent on the availability or condition of rental equipment.

Ownership becomes particularly valuable when you:

  • Make several dives over consecutive days
  • Travel to different dive centres
  • Dive from liveaboards
  • Use nitrox
  • Want a reliable electronic log
  • Need a clear display suited to your eyesight
  • Prefer particular conservatism settings
  • Plan to progress into more advanced diving

There is also a quieter benefit: confidence. You still need to plan the dive, monitor your gas and remain aware of your surroundings, but using a familiar instrument removes one unnecessary uncertainty.

What a Dive Computer Cannot Do

A dive computer is an aid, not a guarantee.

Its calculations are based on a mathematical model. It does not know whether you are tired, dehydrated, cold, unwell or working unusually hard underwater. It cannot eliminate the risk of decompression sickness, even when you remain inside its displayed limits.

DAN emphasizes that decompression sickness is still possible after dives conducted within a computer’s limits. Sensible divers therefore keep a margin rather than treating the final minute of no-decompression time as a target. A computer also cannot replace:

  • Proper training
  • A pre-dive plan
  • Regular gas checks
  • Good buoyancy control
  • A controlled ascent

Learn what the display means before depending on it. A sophisticated computer that you do not understand is less useful than a simple model you can operate confidently.

When Should I Buy One?

You do not need to rush out and buy a computer before your first pool session. During training, using the equipment provided by your dive school can help you understand what features matter to you.

A good time to buy is when you know that you intend to continue diving. For many people, that is shortly after certification and before their first dedicated dive holiday.

If you are asking, do I need a dive computer for one introductory course? Renting is probably sufficient. If you are planning a week of repetitive diving, several trips a year or further training, ownership becomes much easier to justify.

Among personal equipment purchases, a well-chosen computer can also last through several stages of your development. You do not need the most elaborate model on the market; you need one you can read and understand.

What Should a Beginner Look For?

Start with usability rather than an impressive feature list.

A clear display

You must be able to read the important information underwater, in low visibility and while wearing your mask. Large numbers, strong contrast and a logical layout matter more than a fashionable screen.

Simple controls

Try navigating the menus before buying. Can you set the gas, review a dive and find the planning screen without repeatedly consulting the manual?

Nitrox capability

Even if you currently dive only on air, nitrox support is worth having. It is a common next step for recreational divers and is included on most modern computers.

A practical battery system

Some computers have user-replaceable batteries; others are rechargeable or require servicing. Each arrangement has advantages. Think about what will be easiest during travel and whether battery replacements are readily available where you dive.

Suitable future capability

Buy for the diving you genuinely expect to do over the next few years. A dependable recreational computer is enough for most divers. Paying for advanced technical modes makes little sense if you are unlikely to use them.

Optional extras

A digital compass, wireless air integration, colour display and phone syncing can all be useful, but none is essential for a first computer. Air integration can make gas information convenient to view, although divers should understand the equipment configuration and consider an appropriate backup.

Do I Need the Same Computer as My Buddy?

No. Buddies can use different models, and their computers may show slightly different no-decompression limits because of their algorithms and settings.

Before the dive, discuss how you will respond if the displays disagree. A straightforward recreational approach is to follow the more conservative limit while staying within the plan, training and operating procedures for the dive.

Do not alter settings simply to make two computers display matching numbers. Each diver should understand and monitor their own instrument.

So, do I need a dive computer of my own?

If you are trying scuba for the first time or dive very occasionally, probably not. A suitable rental computer can do the job, provided you learn how to use it and keep the same unit throughout your repetitive dive series.

If you expect to dive regularly, the answer is much closer to yes. Your own computer gives you consistency, familiarity and a continuous record of your individual profiles. Those benefits are valuable on an ordinary two-dive day and even more useful during a busy dive holiday.

Choose a computer with a display you can read, controls you understand and features appropriate to your diving. Then read the manual, practise using it and remember that the computer supports good diving—it does not replace it.
