WHAT WILL YOU LEARN

On the SSI Science of Diving course, you will gain in-depth knowledge about the scientific principles behind scuba diving. This course is ideal for divers who wish to understand the underwater environment and how it impacts your dive. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll learn:

1. Diving Physics

  • Pressure and its effects: Learn how pressure increases with depth and affects both your body and dive equipment.
  • Boyle’s Law: Understand how volume and pressure are related, and how this impacts gas in your lungs and diving gear.
  • Archimedes’ Principle: Study the relationship between buoyancy and your body in water, including how to maintain neutral buoyancy.

2. Diving Physiology

  • Human body adaptations: Explore how your body reacts to changes in pressure, temperature, and the breathing gases used during dives.
  • Nitrogen absorption and elimination: Learn about decompression theory, including how nitrogen is absorbed and released by your body and the risk of decompression sickness.
  • Gas exchange and lung function: Understand how gases like oxygen and nitrogen are processed by the body during a dive, and the effects of deep diving on your respiratory system.

3. Decompression Theory

  • Decompression sickness (DCS): Study the symptoms and risks of DCS, and how divers avoid it through proper dive planning, dive tables, and dive computers.
  • Decompression models: Learn about different models used to calculate safe ascent times and depths for divers, ensuring a safe return to the surface.

4. Dive Planning and Safety

  • Dive tables and computers: Understand how to use dive tables and dive computers to plan dives within safe limits.
  • The importance of slow ascents: Learn why you should ascend slowly to avoid nitrogen bubbles forming in your body.
  • Emergency procedures: Review emergency procedures in the event of an emergency ascent or decompression illness.

5. Marine Environment

  • Marine ecosystems: Gain insight into how different underwater environments function and the importance of conserving marine life and minimizing the impact of diving.

Recreational Sidemount Diver Course

SSI Sidemount Diver

SIDEMOUNT DIVER COURSE OVERVIEW

Take a Sidemount Diver course in Kenya.

Normal scuba diving involves carrying a single cylinder on your back. This is back mount diving. Sidemount diving is simply a configuration where the tanks are arranged on your sides rather than your back. Sidemount diving can be used in sport, technical, and overhead environment diving and was originally developed by cave divers.

Unlike back mount diving, sidemount divers often dive with two tanks attached in the water which can make gearing up easier. The tanks are attached to the diver’s harness with bungees or straps which can be easily removed or adjusted while diving.

In technical diving where multiple cylinders often have to be carried some believe that it is easier when using sidemount. You can move onto the SSI Technical Sidemount Diver course from the SSI Recreational Sidemount Course to learn how to mount at least 4 tanks for tech diving.

Sidemount diving is becoming increasingly popular around the world and is one of SSI’s best-selling specialty diver courses.

DURATION

The course takes 3 days with some Digital Learning to be completed in advance. This includes the pool training and ocean dives plus a free sidemount fun dive.

Do I need to be able to swim to scuba dive?

A question that we are constantly asked at Ocean Tribe is “Do I need to be able to swim to scuba dive?”. This is a more complicated answer than a simple yes or no, as it really depends on the experience you are looking to have.

If you are after getting your Open Water Diver licence or any other scuba diving certification then the straight answer in yes. On the entry level Open Water Diver and Scuba Diver courses there are swim and floating tests that you need to be able to accomplish in order to earn the dive certification. On the Open Water courses this is a 200m swim and a 10 minute tread or float.

What are the Top 10 Scuba Diving Movies?

sean connery scuba diving movies

The question of what the top 10 scuba diving movies are is one that we have been debating loads recently in our after-dive gatherings.

The question of whether a movie inspired us to want to take up scuba diving in the first place, to the movie that best displays the underwater world, as well as those movies that include scuba diving and should be included is one that has divided opinion amongst the divers at Ocean Tribe.

So we have made it our mission to ask divers around the world what movie which includes scuba diving as a major plot part is the best and merits a place on the top 10 scuba diving movies?

From our discussions we have put together a list of the top 10 scuba diving movies below and included trailers for you to jog your memory or inspire you to watch them. If you have any movies that you think should be added to the list or replace ones currently on there then we would love to hear them.

Thunderball (1965)– Sean Connery, Adolfo Celi

One of the great underwater films especially bearing in mind it was filmed in the mid 1960s. The James Bond thriller features underwater hiding place, battles, spectacular marine life and of course Sean Connery’s Bond seducing and fighting his way to victory. A classic.

Into the Blue (2005)– Paul Walker, Jessica Alba, Scott Caan, Josh Brolin

Finding sunken treasure, battling drug lords and living in paradise. All in a days work for Paul Walker’s diving instructor character. A film to encourage a new generation of scuba diviers and featuring stunning underwater photography captured in the Bahamas.

Licence to Kill (1989)– Timothy Dalton, Carey Lowell, Robert Davi, Benicio Del Toro

What more should we say. Another James Bond movie with scuba diving prison escapes and underwater battles. The fact that James Bond has to dive so much in his movies should say enough. Diving is cool. Although the escape from the bottom of the ocean to waterski behind the plane might not be great advice for divers!

Fools Gold (2008)– Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Ray Winstone, Kevin Hart

Another Caribbean treasure hunt story, (despite being filmed on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia) Fools Gold features a treasure hunt, a love story, spectacular underwater scenes and light humour, making you really want to get into the water. Not sure about Donald Sutherland learning to dive in a jacuzzi though!

Dark Tide (2012)– Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez

Shark movies often encourage people to misinterpret sharks and safety for diving with sharks. This movie however pulls no punches with that issue and is very clear on the message about sharks, whilst still giving a thrilling tale. Well worth it.

Never Say Never Again (1983)– Sean Connery, Kim Basinger, Klaus Maria Brandauer

A third Bond film to grace the top 10 scuba diving movies, this unofficial (Non-Eon produced) Bond flick has possibly the greatest way to kill time on the way to a dive site ever. Of course it is Sean Connery who pulls it off with Barbara Carrera. Maybe after that the diving would be an anti climax. A similar plot to Thunderbolt updated to the 80s.

Jaws (1975)– Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss

This Spielberg-directed classic might give off the wrong impression about sharks as vicious monsters. But sorry it is still a damn good film and the dive scene in it does still encourage curiosity in the underwater world.

The Deep (1977)– Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte

Another sunken treasure and battling with drug-dealers underwater film, The Deep contains memorable underwater battles, another top performance from Robert Shaw as the wizened old veteran and of course the memorable underwater diving attire of Jacqueline Bisset. An earlier version of Into The Blue perhaps.

Open Water (2003)– Blanchard Ryan, Daniel Travis

This film is not the best for encouraging people to scuba dive, quite the opposite perhaps, but does make us as dive professionals and operators consider a lot about diver safety and procedures. One to watch to remind us how careful we need to be.

Men of Honor (2000)– Robert De Niro, Cuba Gooding Jr., Charlize Theron

Not a scuba-diving movie per-se but rather old school navy helmet diving, however Men of Honor is worth a watch for acknowledging the history of diving and pioneers such as Carl Brashear (portrayed in the movie by Cuba Gooding Jr) in breaking racial barriers and stereotypes. Awesome performances too from Bobby De Niro and Charlize Theron.
