If you’ve ever dreamed of turning your love for the ocean into a career, becoming a diving instructor is one of the most exciting ways to do it. With Ocean Tribe and the system from Scuba Schools International (SSI), the path to becoming a dive pro is structured, achievable, and full of amazing underwater experiences. At Ocean Tribe in Diani Beach, we guide future instructors from their very first breaths underwater to becoming confident professionals.

Start Your Journey with SSI

The first step is the SSI Open Water Diver course. It teaches you the basics of scuba diving and gives you your first certification. From there, you start building your experience and confidence with advanced training. Many divers choose the Advanced Adventurer course next, which gives you a taste of five different specialty areas.

However, you don’t have to take the Advanced Adventurer to move forward. You can choose specific SSI specialties instead. Deep Diving, Navigation, and Night Diving are great options. They sharpen your skills and help you become a true advanced diver while also building your logged dive count.

Next comes the Diver Stress & Rescue course. This level teaches you how to stay calm, solve problems underwater, and assist other divers. It’s a key step for any diver heading toward the professional path.

Why Logging Dives Is So Important

To become a professional diver with SSI, you need to log your dives. It’s more than just a requirement—it’s a record of your experience. For the Divemaster level, you must log at least 60 dives. To qualify for the Instructor Training Course, you’ll need 100.

That might sound like a lot, but with Ocean Tribe’s professional internship packages, you’ll enjoy unlimited diving. Many of our interns finish with far more than 100 logged dives. The more dives you complete, the more confident and capable you become. Plus, logging them in your MySSI app keeps all your certifications and dive records in one place—simple, smart, and professional. You will also qualify for recognition awards along the way with SSI’s system.

Moving Up to Dive Guide and Divemaster

Once you’ve completed Diver Stress & Rescue and logged enough dives, you’ll enter the professional levels. The Dive Guide program teaches you how to lead certified divers safely and manage group dives. Add the Science of Diving course, and you become a Divemaster.

This is a big milestone. As a Divemaster, you’re recognized as a professional. You can assist instructors, supervise training dives, and guide certified divers around the reef. With Ocean Tribe, you’ll learn all of this in a hands-on environment that prepares you for real-world work in the dive industry.

Becoming a Diving Instructor

After Divemaster, you’re ready to become an instructor. The SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) will give you the tools to teach, motivate, and certify new divers. It includes classroom sessions, practical teaching exercises, and in-water assessments. At the end, you’ll take the Instructor Evaluation (IE). Pass it, and you’re ready to teach worldwide.

Ocean Tribe runs ITCs with experienced SSI Instructor Trainers. You’ll be supported from the start and challenged to reach your best potential.

Why You Should Own Your Own Equipment

As you move toward a professional level, having your own diving gear becomes essential. It’s not just about comfort—it’s about consistency and safety. Using the same gear helps you improve faster. You’ll become familiar with how everything works and respond quicker to issues.

Dive pros are expected to know their equipment inside and out. When you dive with rental gear, that’s always changing. Your own gear gives you control and confidence.

What You Get with Ocean Tribe’s Packages

Ocean Tribe offers full professional development packages that include all training from Open Water up to Instructor. You’ll dive daily, gain real-world experience, and work alongside a passionate team. These internships include unlimited diving, all SSI digital and physical materials, and mentoring from seasoned professionals. You can even get your own set of diving equipment.

You’ll also help out with actual courses, guiding divers and assisting students. This builds your skills quickly and makes your transition to instructor smooth and natural.

Other Skills That Help You Succeed

Diving ability is key, but it’s not the only skill that matters in becoming a diving instructor. Strong communication, patience, and confidence go a long way in this career. If you speak more than one language, that’s a huge plus. First aid skills are also essential—and built into the training at rescue and pro levels.

Other useful talents like underwater photography, marine conservation, or even social media skills can help set you apart and open more opportunities.

Internship vs Building Up Over Time

Some divers take their time, earning certifications over several years. That’s a great way to absorb knowledge slowly and build experience in different locations. But if you want to move faster, our internship route is ideal.

With an internship at Ocean Tribe, you’ll dive often, gain structured training, and learn everything in a real dive shop setting. You’ll leave ready for the industry—with confidence, skills, and a long list of logged dives.
