Have you ever dreamed of exploring coral reefs, swimming alongside sea turtles, or discovering a completely different world beneath the surface? The good news is that it is easier than many people think to become a certified scuba diver.

The Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular entry-level scuba certification. It is designed for complete beginners and teaches you everything you need to dive safely and confidently with a buddy anywhere in the world.

At Ocean Tribe in Diani Beach, Kenya, we guide new divers through the process in small groups, ensuring plenty of personal attention and a relaxed learning environment.

What Does It Mean to Become a Certified Scuba Diver?

When you become a certified scuba diver, you earn an internationally recognised certification that allows you to dive independently with another certified diver.

The SSI Open Water Diver certification qualifies you to:

  • Dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres.
  • Rent scuba equipment worldwide.
  • Join guided dive trips and diving holidays.
  • Continue your diving education with advanced and specialty courses.
  • Explore reefs, wrecks, marine life, and underwater environments around the globe.

SSI certifications are digital, permanent, and recognised worldwide.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

The SSI Open Water Diver course is designed to be accessible to almost everyone.

To enrol, you must:

  • Be at least 10 years old.
  • Be reasonably comfortable in the water.
  • Complete a medical questionnaire.
  • Have a sense of adventure.

No previous diving experience is required.

Step 2: Complete Your Digital Learning

Before entering the water, you will begin your SSI Digital Learning.

This flexible online training allows you to learn at your own pace using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Topics include:

  • Scuba equipment
  • Pressure and buoyancy
  • Underwater communication
  • Dive planning
  • Marine environment awareness
  • Safe diving practices

The digital format means you can start learning before arriving at your destination, making your holiday time more enjoyable.

Step 3: Learn Essential Skills in the Pool

Once the theory is complete, you will move into confined water training, usually in a swimming pool.

This is where your instructor introduces the equipment and teaches the fundamental skills every diver needs.

You will learn how to:

  • Assemble and check your equipment
  • Clear water from your mask
  • Recover a regulator
  • Control your buoyancy
  • Communicate underwater
  • Share air with a buddy
  • Manage common diving situations safely

Many students are surprised at how quickly their confidence grows during this stage.

Step 4: Complete Your Open Water Dives

The most exciting part of the course is your open water training dives.

During the SSI Open Water Diver course, you will complete four training dives in the ocean.

These dives allow you to apply the skills learned in the pool while experiencing real underwater conditions.

You will practise:

  • Buoyancy control
  • Safe ascents and descents
  • Underwater navigation
  • Buddy procedures
  • Environmental awareness

At Ocean Tribe, these dives take place on the beautiful reefs of Diani Beach, where you may encounter:

  • Sea turtles
  • Moray eels
  • Rays
  • Reef fish
  • Octopus
  • Healthy coral formations

Every dive builds confidence and experience.

Step 5: Earn Your SSI Open Water Diver Certification

After successfully completing the academic sessions, pool training, and four open water dives, you will receive your SSI Open Water Diver certification.

Congratulations. You have officially become a certified scuba diver.

Your certification is stored digitally in the MySSI app and can be accessed anywhere in the world.

From this point forward, you can dive with a buddy and join dive trips worldwide.

Does It Matter Whether I Choose SSI or Another Agency?

This is one of the most common questions new divers ask.

The reality is that all major training agencies follow internationally recognised standards. Whether you learn through SSI, PADI, NAUI, RAID, CMAS, or another recognised agency, your certification will allow you to dive worldwide.

Many divers choose SSI because:

  • Digital learning is included.
  • The MySSI app stores all certifications digitally.
  • Continuing education pathways are straightforward.
  • Materials are often more affordable than equivalent courses from some other agencies.
  • SSI offers an extensive range of specialty and professional programs.

The quality of your instructor and dive centre is often more important than the logo on the certification card.
